My name is Raza, and I am an MS3 at LECOM Elmira. This is the Last Stand, the best local ice cream spot. My friends and I were out for a nice end-of-semester get-together. This was the last time all of us were together, as we all went to different clinical sites. I am grateful to have met them during my time at LECOM – the people you surround yourself with are very important.

LECOM LIGHT: Dr. David E. Palo, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon

Diplomate: Dental Board of Anesthesiology

Meet David E. Palo, DDS, FACOMS, Board Certified Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon and Clinical Preceptor for the School of Dental Medicine at LECOM. Dr. Palo is in private practice at Presque Isle Oral Surgery in Erie.
Dr. Palo brings a wealth of professional experience and extensive military training, including combat service. He has received numerous awards, including the Humanitarian Service Medal and the Operation Iraqi Freedom Service Medal.
Dr. Palo is also an Eagle Scout, the highest Scouting service award, which he earned after years of community service projects, charitable donations, mentorship to others, and the completion of the official Eagle Scout Project – in his case, the restoration of an old church.
“Though none of us are at our best every day, we should continuously try to serve and help others,” Dr. Palo says. “This commitment to service for others is a core value of LECOM and Osteopathic Medicine.”

Friends Forever-During my first and second years of medical school, I made some of the closest friends I’ll ever have. We grew together through our educational experience and supported each other every step of the way. I truly couldn’t have gotten where I am without the people who were around me bringing laughs and joy through any tough times. We made tons of memories in Erie, like going out to dinner by the lake and spending time on the beach!

Student Doctor Mozhan Hagigatian contributed to a research project at Johns Hopkins University examining the role of light in metabolic regulation, which was recently published in Science Advances. This study highlights how light exposure influences glucose and lipid homeostasis through the sympathetic nervous system, independent of circadian rhythms. As part of this work, she delivered a lecture seminar and presented their findings at the Evidence-Based Medicine Research Symposium at LECOM-Seton Hill.

Congratulations to Dr. Oren Rosenthal, Professor of Anatomy, and Jason DeFrancisis, OMS3, on their groundbreaking case report published in Cureus!
In their article, ‘Investigating the Challenges in Diagnosis and Management of Giant Cell Tumors in the Distal Phalanx,’ they explore the complexities of diagnosing and managing giant cell tumors, a rare and often challenging condition, particularly when located in the distal phalanx. Their research highlights the importance of accurate diagnosis, surgical considerations, and the long-term management of these tumors, offering valuable insights for both clinicians and researchers.

LECOM is ... Service! As a third-year medical student, I attended Healthy Kitchens at LECOM Elmira, hosted by students and faculty. Here, I am making a citrus green bean salad topped with almonds! This event deepened my understanding of the critical role of nutrition in patient care, and I gained practical skills in discussing healthy eating with patients. It also reinforced the need to advocate for improved access to quality food in addressing health disparities.

Two LECOM Bradenton School of Dental Medicine students had the opportunity to serve as panelists in a discussion titled “Strengthening and Building a Culturally Competent Workforce." The panel was an opportunity to discuss mental health, experiences in a postgraduate program, and barriers to success in marginalized communities.
